What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students use a print dictionary, digital dictionary, or glossary to research an unfamiliar word. They choose the meaning that fits the sentence. They use syllable marks and pronunciation guides or audio to say the word correctly.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students independently find the correct dictionary entry and select the meaning that matches the context. They mark the syllables and pronounce the word accurately using the guide or audio.
Common Misconceptions
- Students often choose the first definition instead of the meaning that fits the sentence. They may divide syllables by guessing or read pronunciation symbols as regular spelling. Some ignore stress marks or audio models.
How to Assess It
- Give students the word “reluctant” in a sentence. Have them use a print or digital dictionary to record its meaning, divide its syllables, and pronounce it aloud.

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs print dictionaries and sticky notes to label a word’s fitting definition, syllable breaks, and pronunciation guide.
Ask, “Which meaning fits this sentence best?” Students write a two-sentence explanation using context and the dictionary entry.
Run a word-card relay where teams find each word, record its syllables and meaning, then pronounce it for a point.
Students choose an unfamiliar word from a school notice, look it up, and explain its meaning and pronunciation to a partner.
