What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students consult a print dictionary or trusted online dictionary to investigate unfamiliar words. They choose a meaning that fits the context, divide the word into syllables, pronounce it, identify its origin, and use it correctly.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Given an unfamiliar word in context, a student independently finds the correct dictionary entry and selects the matching definition. The student marks syllables, pronounces the word accurately, identifies its source language, and uses the word correctly.
Common Misconceptions
- Students often choose the first definition without checking the sentence context. They may confuse syllable breaks with word parts, read pronunciation symbols as regular spelling, or mistake a synonym for the source language.
How to Assess It
- Give students the word spectator in the sentence, “The spectators cheered from the stands.” Ask them to use a dictionary, record the matching meaning, mark syllables, pronounce the word, and name its source language.

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs print dictionaries and word cards; students label the definition, syllable breaks, pronunciation guide, and word origin with sticky notes.
Ask students to explain which dictionary meaning fits a sentence and cite the context clue that ruled out another meaning.
Run a dictionary relay where teams locate a word, divide it into syllables, pronounce it, and report its source language.
Have students investigate a menu, sports, or technology word and create a mini entry with its meaning, pronunciation, syllables, and origin.
