Students infer unfamiliar word meanings from contrast, cause and effect, and Greek or Latin roots. They use print or digital references to check meaning, pronunciation, syllables, origin, and part of speech. They then use new words accurately in speaking and writing.

Common Misconceptions

Students may treat a nearby word as the definition without noticing contrast or cause and effect signals. They may confuse syllables with roots, or assume a root gives the complete meaning. Some copy the first dictionary meaning without checking pronunciation or part of speech.

How to Assess It

Give students this exit ticket: “Unlike a monologue, the dialogue let both characters speak.” Ask them to infer “dialogue,” verify it in a dictionary, label its part of speech, divide its syllables, and write a new sentence.
