What Students Need to Do
- Students find an unfamiliar word in a reliable print or digital dictionary and read the entry accurately. They choose the context-fitting meaning, decode pronunciation, mark syllables, identify language history and grammar role, then use the word correctly.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Given a word in context, a student selects the correct sense instead of copying the first definition. The student records accurate entry details, then uses the word naturally in a new sentence.
Common Misconceptions
- Students often copy the first definition even when it does not fit the sentence. They may treat syllable breaks as prefixes and suffixes, or guess pronunciation without using the key or audio. They also confuse a word’s origin with its meaning and assume its part of speech never changes.
How to Assess It
- Give students the word “benevolent” in a sentence. Ask them to use a dictionary to record its context-fitting meaning, syllables, pronunciation, origin, part of speech, and a new sentence.
