What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students interpret figures of speech, including euphemism and oxymoron, and analyze their roles in a text. They also examine nuanced differences among words with similar denotations.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student explains both the contextual meaning and rhetorical function of a figure. The student compares near synonyms by association, register, intensity, stance, and likely audience effect.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may translate a euphemism or oxymoron without analyzing why the author used it. They may treat similar denotation as identical meaning or describe nuance only as positive versus negative.
How to Assess It
- Give students a contextual euphemism, oxymoron, and three near synonyms. Ask them to interpret the figures, analyze roles, and compare nuanced effects.

Ways to Teach It
Build rhetorical analysis charts connecting figure, literal wording, contextual meaning, purpose, audience effect, denotation, and nuance.
Ask, ‘What does this euphemism soften or conceal, and how does that choice serve the text?’
Play Nuance and Figure Audit by improving incomplete analyses that name devices without explaining role or effect.
Analyze euphemisms, oxymorons, and loaded near synonyms in public statements or advertising.
