What This Cluster Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students expand, combine, and reduce sentences to improve meaning, interest, and style. They also compare dialects and registers used by characters or speakers in stories, dramas, and poems.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student can revise several choppy sentences into a clear combined sentence and trim a wordy one without losing meaning. The student compares two varieties of English from a story, drama, or poem and explains how each helps reveal context, character, or relationship.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may combine sentences into a run-on or remove details that carry important meaning. They may label a dialect as incorrect instead of analyzing how its use fits a speaker and context.
How to Assess It
- Give students three choppy sentences and two short excerpts from a story, drama, or poem that use different dialects or registers. Ask them to revise the sentences, compare the language varieties, and explain what each suggests about the speakers or context.

Ways to Teach It
Cut sentences into clauses and phrase strips; students combine or reduce them while preserving the intended meaning.
Ask, ‘How does this character's language differ from the narrator's, and what does that difference show?’
Play Sentence Revision Relay by expanding, combining, or reducing a sentence to meet a purpose card.
Compare language in a formal announcement and a family conversation, then explain how each register fits.
