Teacher's field guide

What Students Need to Do: Students choose words and phrases that express ideas precisely. They use punctuation for effect and shift between formal English and informal discussion when the context calls for it.
What Mastery Looks Like: A student replaces vague wording with precise language and explains the improvement. The student can choose punctuation to shape emphasis and revise the same idea for a presentation or a small-group conversation.
Common Misconceptions: Students may confuse precise language with longer language or add punctuation randomly for excitement. They may use one level of formality for every audience and purpose.
How to Assess It: Give students a vague, informal sentence with plain punctuation. Ask them to revise it for a formal presentation and explain one word and punctuation choice.
