Teacher's field guide

What Students Need to Do: Students choose punctuation that shapes pace, emphasis, feeling, or the relationship among ideas. They compare possible marks and select the one that creates the intended effect.
What Mastery Looks Like: A student can punctuate the same words in different ways and describe the effect on reading. The student chooses a mark because of meaning and purpose, not decoration.
Common Misconceptions: Students may add exclamation points whenever a sentence feels important or use commas as pauses without considering structure. They may name a punctuation mark but not explain its effect.
How to Assess It: Give students a short line of dialogue with no ending mark. Ask them to punctuate it for two different effects and explain each reading.

Lesson moves

Place comma, colon, question-mark, and exclamation-mark cards into sentences, then read each version aloud.
Ask, ‘Which punctuation best creates suspense here, and how would another mark change the reader's experience?’
Play Punctuation Director by drawing an effect card and revising a sentence to produce that effect.
Compare punctuation on posters and signs, then revise one sign to make its message clearer or more urgent.
