What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students select words and phrases that create a deliberate effect on a reader or listener. They consider precision, imagery, sound, mood, and emphasis rather than choosing the first word that comes to mind.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student can replace a general word with one that produces a clearer intended effect. The student explains how the choice changes what the audience imagines, feels, or notices.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may choose a longer word because it sounds impressive even when it changes the meaning. They may name an effect after revising but fail to connect it to the chosen language.
How to Assess It
- Give students the sentence, ‘The dog went across the yard.’ Ask them to revise went for a chosen effect and explain the result.

Arrange vivid verb and adjective cards beside a plain sentence, then test how each choice changes the effect.
Ask, ‘Should the character whisper, mumble, or shout here, and what does each choice suggest?’
