What Students Need to Do: Students choose words and phrases that express an idea exactly and clearly. They replace vague, broad, or slightly inaccurate language with wording that matches the intended meaning.
What Mastery Looks Like: A student can identify what makes a word choice imprecise and revise it without changing the idea. The student explains the useful distinction created by the new wording.
Common Misconceptions: Students may confuse precision with using longer or more advanced words. They may add extra description while leaving the key action, quantity, or relationship vague.
How to Assess It: Give students the sentence, ‘The animal moved over there.’ Ask them to revise it for a specific scene and explain two precise choices.

Ask, ‘Which word states the idea most exactly, and what misunderstanding does it prevent?’
