What Students Need to Do: Students choose language that communicates ideas precisely and concisely. They recognize and remove wordiness, repeated meaning, and unnecessary qualifiers while preserving important detail and emphasis.
What Mastery Looks Like: A student can replace a vague phrase with exact wording and shorten a sentence without flattening its meaning. The student distinguishes useful repetition from redundancy.
Common Misconceptions: Students may assume concise writing must be terse or remove evidence readers need. They may replace clear language with a single complicated word that is less precise.
How to Assess It: Give students a wordy paragraph with repeated ideas and vague phrases. Ask them to cut ten words, improve two choices, and explain what remained.
