What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students expand, combine, and reduce sentences to shape meaning, interest, and style. They decide which details and structures serve the reader or listener rather than revising for length alone.

What Mastery Looks Like

A student can combine choppy ideas, expand a sentence with useful detail, and reduce wordiness without losing meaning. The student explains how the revision improves emphasis, flow, or style.

Common Misconceptions

Students may combine sentences into a run-on or expand by adding details that distract from the main idea. They may reduce a sentence by deleting information readers need.

How to Assess It

Give students three choppy sentences and one wordy sentence. Ask them to combine the first set, reduce the last, and explain one stylistic choice.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Cut sentences into clause and phrase strips; students expand, combine, or reduce them for an assigned effect.

  2. Ask, ‘Which detail deserves emphasis, and how can sentence structure help the reader notice it?’

  3. Play Revision Relay by drawing expand, combine, or reduce cards and improving the same short paragraph.

  4. Edit a school announcement to keep every necessary detail while making the message smoother and more engaging.
