Teacher's field guide

What Students Need to Do: Students vary sentence patterns to control meaning, emphasis, interest, and style. They keep style and tone consistent with the purpose, audience, and situation across a piece or presentation.
What Mastery Looks Like: A student can revise repetitive sentence openings and lengths without making the writing confusing. The student notices an unintended shift in formality or attitude and edits it to restore a consistent tone.
Common Misconceptions: Students may vary sentences by making every sentence longer or adding unnecessary words. They may change tone abruptly because one sentence sounds appealing by itself but does not fit the whole piece.
How to Assess It: Give students a repetitive paragraph with one abrupt tone shift. Ask them to revise two sentence patterns and correct the shift while preserving the meaning.

Lesson moves

Cut a paragraph into sentence strips; students reorder, combine, or divide sentences to improve pattern and emphasis.
Ask, ‘Which sentence should carry the strongest emphasis, and how can its pattern and tone achieve that?’

Compare wording in a public service announcement and a friendly reminder, then revise each for consistent style.
