Teacher's field guide

What Students Need to Do: Students notice that people use language differently in conversation and in school tasks. They compare conversational and academic wording, then choose language that fits the setting and purpose.
What Mastery Looks Like: A student can express the same idea in an informal conversation and in a classroom explanation. The student can name the wording that makes one version more academic.
Common Misconceptions: Students may think conversational English is wrong rather than suited to a different context. They may replace words with longer ones that sound formal but change the meaning.
How to Assess It: Give students the conversational sentence, ‘That bug is really weird.’ Ask them to revise it for a science observation and explain one change.
