Teacher's field guide

What Students Need to Do: Students use active or passive voice and conditional or subjunctive mood to create specific effects. They choose forms that emphasize an actor or action, express possibility, or describe a contrary-to-fact situation.
What Mastery Looks Like: A student can rewrite a sentence in active and passive voice and explain the change in emphasis. The student uses conditional and subjunctive forms accurately when discussing possibilities and unreal situations.
Common Misconceptions: Students may assume passive voice is always wrong or confuse it with past tense. They may use was where formal subjunctive were is needed, or present a condition without its result.
How to Assess It: Give students an active sentence and a contrary-to-fact prompt. Ask for a purposeful passive revision, a subjunctive response, and an explanation of each effect.

Lesson moves

Move actor, action, and receiver cards to build active and passive versions, then label what each version emphasizes.
Ask, ‘If the narrator were more confident, how would the statement change, and why?’
Play Voice and Mood Match by pairing sentence cards with purpose cards for emphasis, possibility, or contrary fact.
Compare active and passive wording in news headlines, then discuss what each headline foregrounds or leaves unclear.
