What Students Need to Do: Students compare how English is used in casual conversation and in academic settings. They notice differences in vocabulary, sentence form, detail, and level of formality.
What Mastery Looks Like: A student can express the same idea conversationally and academically without changing its meaning. The student identifies specific language choices that make each version fit its setting.
Common Misconceptions: Students may call conversational English wrong instead of recognizing its appropriate uses. They may make a sentence sound academic by adding long words that do not fit the meaning.
How to Assess It: Give students the comment, ‘The plant got big fast.’ Ask them to revise it for a science observation and explain two language changes.
