What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students distinguish situations that call for formal English from those where informal conversation is appropriate. They adjust wording, sentence form, and tone to fit the audience and purpose.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student can revise one message for a presentation and for a small-group discussion. The student points to language features that make each version suitable.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may treat informal language as wrong or use casual expressions in every setting. They may make formal language stiff or confusing by replacing clear words with unnecessarily complex ones.
How to Assess It
- Give students an informal request made to a friend. Ask them to revise it for a principal and explain two changes in formality.

Ways to Teach It
Sort message cards by formal presentation, informal discussion, or either, then revise one borderline example.
Ask, ‘How would you explain this idea to your group and then present it to the school board?’
Play Context Switch by drawing audience cards and revising the same statement for each new situation.
Compare a team chat with a formal invitation, then identify how language choices serve each real audience.
