What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students maintain a consistent style and tone across writing and speaking. They make language choices that fit the audience and purpose, then repair shifts that feel accidental or distracting.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student can name the intended style and tone and identify a sentence that breaks either one. The student revises the mismatch while preserving the original information.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may confuse topic with tone or assume every piece must sound formal. They may shift from serious to playful wording without purpose or revise tone by changing only punctuation.
How to Assess It
- Give students a formal paragraph containing one casual sentence. Ask them to identify the shift, revise it, and describe the resulting tone.

Ways to Teach It
Highlight style and tone signals in a paragraph, then replace one sentence that breaks the established pattern.
Ask, ‘What tone fits this audience and purpose, and which word choice disrupts it?’
Play Tone Continuity by sorting sentence cards into a coherent piece and revising the outlier.
Edit a student council message so its respectful, persuasive tone remains consistent from greeting through closing.
