What this standard means
Students need to use data, not just opinions, to explain how food, water, light, space, or shelter affect organisms. They should connect resource changes to individual growth and population size in an ecosystem.
Mastery looks like reading a graph, table, or data set and making a clear cause and effect claim with evidence. Students often mix up individual growth with population growth. They may also say resources “help” organisms without naming the specific resource or using numbers from the data.
Ways to teach it
- Have students grow radish seeds in cups with different water amounts, then measure height and sprout counts over one week.
- Ask students to write a claim explaining how a drought might change rabbit and grass populations, using a simple data table.
- Give a two-line graph of algae growth under high and low light, and ask for one evidence-based conclusion.
- Use local deer, squirrels, or schoolyard plants to discuss how food, water, and space limit population size.
