Use mathematical representations to support and revise explanations based on evidence about factors affecting biodiversity and populations in ecosystems of different scales.
Next Generation Science Standards
What this standard means
Students need to use provided data to explain what is happening to populations or biodiversity in an ecosystem. They should calculate averages, compare graphs, spot trends, and connect changes to factors like rainfall, temperature, habitat loss, predators, disease, or resource availability.
Mastery looks like a student saying, “The frog population dropped after wetland area decreased, and the graph supports that because…” then revising an earlier explanation when new data appears. Students often get stuck describing a graph without explaining cause, confusing correlation with proof, or ignoring scale when comparing a pond, forest, or region.
Ways to teach it
- Give pairs a deer population table and wolf count graph, then have them calculate averages and write one evidence-based explanation.
- Ask students, “Which factor best explains the population change, and what data would make you revise your answer?”
- Use an exit ticket with one small graph and ask for the trend, one calculation, and one supported claim.
- Compare local bird count data from eBird with land use maps, then discuss how neighborhood changes may affect biodiversity.
