Use the periodic table as a model to predict the relative properties of elements based on the patterns of electrons in the outermost energy level of atoms.

What this standard means

Students need to use the periodic table as a pattern tool, not just a chart of facts. They should connect group number and valence electrons to likely behavior, such as metal reactivity, bonding type, number of bonds, and reaction with oxygen.

Mastery looks like making a prediction for a main group element and explaining it with electron patterns. Students often mix up periods and groups, treat all metals as equally reactive, or memorize trends without linking them to outer electrons.

Ways to teach it

  • Give pairs element cards and have them sort by valence electrons, then predict bonding patterns before checking with the periodic table.
  • Ask students to write: Which is more reactive, sodium or aluminum, and what electron pattern supports your claim?
  • Show four main group elements and ask students to predict metal or nonmetal, likely ion charge, and one bonding behavior.
  • Use phone battery materials or fireworks colors to discuss why element properties matter in product design and safety.
