What This Cluster Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students identify major rivers, seas, deserts, mountains, peninsulas, and countries on political and physical maps of the region. They use relative location to distinguish nearby features.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students accurately label the assigned features on a blank regional map. They can describe locations using statements such as, “The Gobi Desert is north of China’s major rivers.”
Common Misconceptions
- Students may confuse the Huang He with the Yangtze or treat the Yellow Sea as part of the Yellow River. They may switch North Korea and South Korea, or label Indonesia as one island. They may also place the Himalayas inside central India.
How to Assess It
- Give students a blank map and ask them to label China, India, the Himalayas, the Ganges River, the Yangtze River, and the Korean Peninsula.

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs a blank map, an atlas, and feature cards to place before copying each label onto the map.
Ask students to write five relative location clues for classmates, such as, “Find the country south of China and west of Vietnam.”
Run a map relay where teams draw feature cards and point to each location on a projected blank map.
Have students trace a cargo route from India to Japan, naming the ocean and seas the ship could cross.
