What Students Need to Do: Students find China, India, Japan, North Korea, South Korea, and Vietnam on world and regional maps. They use borders, coastlines, and nearby countries to confirm each location.
What Mastery Looks Like: Students correctly label all six countries on an unlabeled map. They distinguish North Korea from South Korea and identify Japan as an island country.
Common Misconceptions: Students may place North Korea below South Korea or confuse Vietnam with nearby Southeast Asian countries. They may label the Korean Peninsula as China or place Japan on the Asian mainland.
How to Assess It: Give students an unlabeled regional map and ask them to label all six countries without notes. Have them circle the two island or peninsula locations.

Lesson moves

Give pairs a laminated blank map and six country cards to place, check, remove, and place again from memory.
Ask students to write two location clues for each country, using coastlines, borders, islands, or nearby countries.
Play a map relay where teams take turns placing one country label correctly before passing the marker.
Display current weather maps for the six countries, then have students locate each forecast area on a regional map.
