What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students find six named Latin American countries on both world and regional maps. They use coastlines, borders, landforms, and nearby bodies of water as location clues.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students correctly label all six countries on an unlabeled map. They can describe each location using clues such as continent, coast, neighboring countries, or nearby water.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may confuse Colombia with nearby Venezuela or place Chile away from South America's western coast. They may mistake Cuba for another Caribbean island or overlook Panama's narrow location between continents.
How to Assess It
- Give students an unlabeled regional map and ask them to label Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Cuba, Mexico, and Panama without notes.

Ask students to write one location clue for each country without using the country's name.
Play map relay by calling a country and having teams point to it on projected world and regional maps.
Plan a six-stop news reporter route and have students mark each country, then describe the direction traveled between stops.
