What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students locate and label major landforms and bodies of water in and around Latin America on world and regional maps. They use coastlines, nearby countries, and relative position to tell the features apart.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students accurately place each feature on an unlabeled political-physical map. They also describe locations with clues such as west of South America or between North and South America.
Common Misconceptions
- Students often confuse the Amazon River with the larger rainforest around it. They may swap the Atlantic and Pacific, place the Andes in Mexico, or treat the Panama Canal as a natural river. The Sierra Madre and Atacama Desert are also often placed too far east.
How to Assess It
- Give students an unlabeled regional map and a word bank with all ten features. Ask them to label each feature, then write location clues for the Panama Canal and Andes Mountains.

Ways to Teach It
Pairs build a relief map with clay mountains, sand desert, yarn waterways, and blue paper oceans, then add labels.
Prompt students to explain how the Andes, Amazon River, and nearby oceans help them orient an unlabeled map of South America.
Play map relay: teams draw a feature card, place a sticky label on a wall map, and explain one location clue.
Trace a cargo route from the Pacific through the Panama Canal to the Atlantic, marking each body of water it enters.
