What This Cluster Means

What Students Need to Do

Students locate the Sahara, Sahel, savanna, tropical rain forest, major rivers, lakes, Atlas Mountains, and Kalahari Desert. They also locate Egypt, Kenya, Nigeria, South Africa, Sudan, South Sudan, and the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

What Mastery Looks Like

Given a blank map and word bank, a student places each feature and country in the correct area with few or no errors. The student can describe locations using terms such as north of, south of, inland, coastal, and along a river.

Common Misconceptions

Students often swap the Niger, Nile, and Congo rivers or treat river names as countries. They may blur the Sahara, Sahel, and savanna into one region, or confuse Sudan with South Sudan. Some also confuse the Democratic Republic of the Congo with the Republic of the Congo.

How to Assess It

Give students a blank Africa map and a word bank with Egypt, Kenya, Nigeria, South Africa, Nile River, Congo River, Sahara, and Lake Victoria. Have them label all eight and write one relative-location sentence.

Ways to Teach It

  1. On a printed outline map, use blue yarn for rivers, textured paper for deserts, and labels for countries, mountains, lakes, and regions.

  2. Ask students to explain how they would distinguish the Sahara, Sahel, savanna, and tropical rain forest on an unlabeled map.

  3. Run a map relay where teams draw a location card, place it correctly, and earn a bonus point for a relative-location clue.

  4. Plan a Cairo-to-Cape Town route, then mark which listed countries, rivers, deserts, lakes, and vegetation regions travelers might encounter.
