What This Cluster Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students find and label the major landforms, bodies of water, and countries named for Latin America. They use both world maps and closer regional maps.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students accurately place each feature and country on an unlabeled map. They can also describe locations using clues such as west of Brazil or along the Pacific coast.
Common Misconceptions
- Students often confuse the Amazon River with the larger Amazon Rainforest. They may place the Andes in Brazil, mix up the Caribbean Sea and Gulf of Mexico, or put Cuba on the mainland.
How to Assess It
- Give students a blank regional map and ask them to label the Andes Mountains, Amazon River, Caribbean Sea, Panama Canal, and Brazil without notes.

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs a blank map, blue yarn, and label cards to place the waters, river, mountains, desert, rainforest, canal, and countries.
Ask students to write three location clues, such as "west of Brazil," then trade clues and identify each place.
Run a map relay where teams draw a feature card, point to its location, and name one nearby country or physical feature.
Trace a cargo ship route through the Panama Canal, labeling the Pacific Ocean, Atlantic Ocean, Panama, and nearby Caribbean Sea.
