Teacher's field guide

What Students Need to Do: Students identify and label the named countries, rivers, seas, mountains, plains, and peninsulas on maps of Europe. They use nearby features to describe relative location.
What Mastery Looks Like: Students accurately place the listed features on blank political and physical maps. They can identify a feature from clues such as borders, coastlines, and nearby landforms.
Common Misconceptions: Students often confuse the Alps with the Pyrenees, or the Iberian Peninsula with the Scandinavian Peninsula. They may reverse the Rhine and Danube Rivers or misplace Russia and Ukraine.
How to Assess It: Give students a blank map of Europe and ask them to label five assigned features. Add one prompt: Describe each feature using a nearby country or landform.

Lesson moves

Have students color and label countries, waterways, mountains, plains, and peninsulas on a blank map using five different colors.
Ask students to write three location clues for a European feature, then trade clues with a partner who identifies it.
Play map bingo using feature names while students cover matching locations on numbered regional maps.
Plan a rail trip from Spain to Poland, naming countries, mountains, rivers, or plains crossed along the route.
