Teacher's field guide

What Students Need to Do: Students use world and regional maps to find the Great Barrier Reef, Coral Sea, Uluru, also called Ayers Rock, and Great Victoria Desert. They identify each feature as water, reef, rock formation, or desert.
What Mastery Looks Like: On an unlabeled map, students can correctly mark and name all four features. They can describe each location using terms such as northeast coast, offshore, central Australia, and southern interior.
Common Misconceptions: Students may place the Great Barrier Reef inland or treat the Coral Sea and reef as the same feature. They may not recognize that Uluru and Ayers Rock are two names for one place, or may place Great Victoria Desert in Victoria.
How to Assess It: Give students a blank outline map of Australia. Have them label the four features and write one accurate location clue beside each label.

Lesson moves

Create a floor map with tape, then have students place labeled cards for the reef, sea, rock formation, and desert.
Write three sentences comparing the locations of Uluru, the Great Victoria Desert, and the Great Barrier Reef.
Play a map relay where teams race to place one feature card correctly, then explain its location before earning a point.
Plan a four-stop Australian travel route and note which map feature visitors would see or cross at each stop.
