What This Cluster Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students identify where farming, mining, manufacturing, trade, and services are concentrated on maps. They explain these locations using resources, climate, land, workers, transportation, and nearby markets.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students can describe a cluster, route, or regional pattern shown on a map. They can compare two possible locations and support the better choice with geographic evidence.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may assume businesses locate wherever raw materials are found or that population size is the only factor. They may confuse where resources are collected with where products are manufactured or sold.
How to Assess It
- Show a map with a river, highway, city, farmland, and port. Ask students to place a food-processing plant and give two reasons for their choice.

Ways to Teach It
Give groups a blank map and business cards, then have them place each business and label the geographic factors behind each choice.
Ask students to write which matters more for a factory, nearby resources or nearby customers, and defend their answer with an example.
Play a location challenge where teams match farms, mines, factories, and stores to map sites and earn points for accurate explanations.
Trace a Georgia peach from farm to grocery store, marking where growing, packing, shipping, and selling occur and why.
