- Students explain how people or regions focus on certain jobs or products. They connect that focus to greater production, trade, and access to more goods and services.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student can compare Northern manufacturing with Southern cash-crop farming and explain how each region depended on trade. The student can trace specialization to productivity, exchange, and living conditions.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may think specialization means working alone or producing everything locally. They may treat the North and South as uniform economies. They may also assume everyone benefited equally, overlooking slavery and unequal access to wealth.
How to Assess It
- Give students this prompt: “How can specializing in one product improve living standards?” Require a three-step explanation using productivity, trade, and goods or services.

Have teams make paper books, first individually and then with assigned cutting, folding, stapling, and labeling jobs, and compare output.
Ask students to write how Northern factories and Southern cotton farms relied on each other, including who benefited and who did not.
