A student can match each amendment to its purpose and explain how the Freedmen’s Bureau supported formerly enslaved people. The student can use examples to show why legal freedom did not bring equal treatment or economic independence.

Common Misconceptions

Students may think Reconstruction meant only repairing damaged buildings. They may assume the amendments created immediate equality or that sharecropping offered a fair path to land ownership. Some view Jim Crow as prejudice alone, rather than laws and customs that enforced segregation and restricted rights.

How to Assess It

Give this exit ticket: “Choose one Reconstruction amendment. State the right it protected, then name one practice that kept many Black Americans from fully using that right.”

   Give groups amendment, Freedmen’s Bureau, sharecropping, and Jim Crow cards to sort under Expanded Rights, Provided Aid, or Limited Freedom.
