What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students identify how Jim Crow laws and customs restricted the rights and daily lives of Black Americans. They connect specific restrictions to effects on education, voting, travel, work, safety, and opportunity.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students can explain why separate schools and public facilities produced unequal conditions. They can use a photo, document, or personal account to connect a restriction with short-term and long-term effects.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may think segregation came only from personal prejudice, rather than laws and public institutions. They may assume separate facilities were equal or that court rulings changed daily life at once. Some confuse ending legal segregation with ending discrimination.
How to Assess It
- Exit ticket: Name one Jim Crow law or practice. Explain two effects it had on Black Americans, using the word because in each explanation.

Ways to Teach It
Give groups source cards showing segregated schools, buses, lunch counters, and voter barriers, then have them build labeled cause-and-effect chains.
Ask students to write: How could unequal access to schools, voting, and public spaces shape a person's choices and opportunities?
Play Cause or Effect: students draw a card, classify it, and match it to the Jim Crow restriction it explains.
Compare a historic segregated public facility with its present-day use, using photos or local records to identify what changed.
