What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students explain how laws, court rulings, voting barriers, and violence worked together to deny African Americans equal rights. They use historical evidence to connect each method to its political, social, or economic effects.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students can explain how segregation gained legal protection and how poll taxes, literacy tests, white primaries, and intimidation blocked political power. They can describe the 1906 Atlanta Race Massacre as organized white mob violence and explain its causes and effects.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may think Plessy v. Ferguson created segregation, rather than upheld it through the separate but equal doctrine. They may mistake disenfranchisement for voluntary nonparticipation or describe the Atlanta massacre as a conflict between equal sides.
How to Assess It
- Give students a Jim Crow law excerpt and a short account of the Atlanta massacre. Ask them to identify the right denied and explain the method used.
