What Students Need to Do: Students explain why white lawmakers challenged Black legislators’ right to hold office, including racist efforts to regain political control. They trace the results, including federal intervention, renewed military rule, reinstatement, and delayed readmission.
What Mastery Looks Like: A student can use speeches, voting records, and constitutional language to separate stated legal claims from racist political motives. The student can connect the removal to federal action and the legislators’ later return.
Common Misconceptions: Students may assume that voting rights automatically protected the right to hold office, or that Georgia law clearly banned Black officeholders. They may also think the removal was permanent, missing federal intervention and reinstatement.
How to Assess It: Exit ticket: In three sentences, name one stated reason and one underlying motive for the removal, then explain one effect on Georgia’s Reconstruction.

Lesson moves
