What Students Need to Do

Students explain how major battles, the Union blockade, emancipation, and Sherman’s campaigns affected Georgia. They connect wartime events to changes in Georgia’s people, economy, land, and government.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students use specific evidence to explain cause and effect, rather than listing events. They can compare impacts on enslaved people, civilians, soldiers, farms, railroads, and cities.

Common Misconceptions

Students may think the Emancipation Proclamation immediately freed every enslaved person in Georgia. They may also confuse the Atlanta Campaign with the March to the Sea or assume all parts of Georgia suffered equal damage.

How to Assess It

Give students this exit prompt: “Choose one Civil War event in Georgia and explain two effects it had on different groups or places.” Require two specific details.

   Give groups event cards and a Georgia map, then have them place battles and campaigns and attach labeled impact notes.

   Ask students to write which wartime event changed Georgia most, using two facts and one response to a competing choice.
