What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students place six major wartime developments in order and locate key Georgia sites on a map. They explain effects on military strategy, slavery, supplies, cities, prisoners, and civilians. They support cause and effect claims with evidence.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student explains how the blockade limited trade, how emancipation changed the war, and why Chickamauga and Atlanta mattered. The student connects the March to transportation and economic damage and describes conditions at Andersonville.
Common Misconceptions
- Students often say the Emancipation Proclamation immediately freed every enslaved person everywhere. They may confuse the Confederate victory at Chickamauga with the Union capture of Atlanta, or treat the March as one battle. Some mistake Andersonville for a battle rather than a prison camp.
How to Assess It
- Give students a six-row exit ticket with the blockade, proclamation, Chickamauga, Atlanta Campaign, March to the Sea, and Andersonville. For each, they write one outcome and one effect on Georgia.

Give pairs a Georgia map, yarn, and event cards to build a floor timeline linking the coast, Chickamauga, Atlanta, Savannah, and Andersonville.
Ask students to write: Which event most changed life in Georgia, and what two pieces of evidence support your choice?
Run an event and impact card sort, then have teams correct one mismatched pair and explain the correction.
Trace a classroom object's supply route, then compare how a blocked port or destroyed railroad would affect its price and availability.
