Teacher's field guide

What Students Need to Do: Students place key Civil War events in time and on a map. They explain what happened at each event and how it affected the war's outcome.
What Mastery Looks Like: Students correctly sequence the events from Fort Sumter through Appomattox Court House. They locate Georgia events and explain why Gettysburg, the Atlanta Campaign, and Sherman's March weakened the Confederacy.
Common Misconceptions: Students may think Gettysburg ended the war or that Appomattox was a battle where every Confederate army surrendered. They may confuse the Atlanta Campaign with Sherman's March or think Fort Sumter was attacked by Union forces.
How to Assess It: Give students five event names to place in order, then ask them to choose one and write how it changed the war.

Lesson moves

Give pairs event cards and a blank map, then have them place, sequence, and label each event with one result.
Ask students to write: Which event most weakened the Confederacy, and what evidence supports your choice?
Play a clue-matching game where teams connect each location, date, leader, or result to the correct event.
Compare a modern Georgia road map with Sherman's route, then list communities, railroads, and resources affected along the way.
