SS8H9 is a Georgia social studies standard. These are the elements under it.

What Students Need to Do

Students explain how Georgia supported the war through aircraft production, shipbuilding, military bases, and political leadership. They connect these efforts to wartime needs and changes in Georgia’s economy.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students can locate major wartime sites and explain what each contributed. They can compare Carl Vinson’s support for naval expansion with Richard Russell’s work for military bases and federal funding.

Common Misconceptions

Students may think major battles occurred in Georgia or that Pearl Harbor is in Georgia. They may also confuse the Bell plant with shipyards or overlook how wartime jobs changed Georgia’s economy.

How to Assess It

Give students four terms: Bell Bomber Plant, Brunswick shipyards, Carl Vinson, and Richard Russell. Ask them to write one accurate contribution and one Georgia impact for each.

   Give pairs a Georgia map and site cards for Marietta, Savannah, Brunswick, and major bases, then have them place and annotate each card.

   Ask students to write: Which mattered more to Georgia’s war effort, military bases or wartime factories, and what evidence supports your claim?

   Run a matching relay with people, places, products, and impacts, including Carl Vinson, Richard Russell, Bell aircraft, Liberty ships, and jobs.
