What Students Need to Do: Students explain how segregation separated Black and White people in schools, transportation, businesses, and other public places. They describe how unfair rules limited Black Americans’ rights, safety, education, jobs, and voting access.
What Mastery Looks Like: Students can connect a specific law or practice to its effect on everyday life. They can use an example, such as separate schools or voting tests, to explain unequal treatment.
Common Misconceptions: Students may think separate facilities were equal in quality or that segregation happened only in the South. They may also confuse Jim Crow laws with slavery or believe Black citizens had no legal rights at all.
How to Assess It: Give this exit prompt: “Choose one Jim Crow law or practice. Explain two ways it affected Black Americans’ daily lives.”

Lesson moves

Set up artifact stations with photographs, signs, school supply lists, and voting test samples, then have students record the inequality shown at each station.
Discuss or write: “How would separate schools, buses, parks, and libraries affect a child’s daily choices and future opportunities?”
Play a card match in which students pair Jim Crow laws and practices with effects such as reduced voting access or unequal schooling.
Compare a historical photograph of a segregated public place with a current photograph, then list changes brought by later civil rights laws.
