What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students explain how sharecropping worked after slavery ended. They describe how debt, unfair contracts, restrictive laws, and intimidation limited the rights and choices of freed Black Americans.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students can trace how a sharecropper received land and supplies, raised a crop, and often ended the year in debt. They can give examples of how voting, movement, work, and legal rights were restricted.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may think sharecroppers owned the land or always received half the crop as profit. They may also think freedom immediately brought equal rights, or that rights were limited only through laws and not through threats or violence.
How to Assess It
- Ask students to draw a three-step chain showing how sharecropping could lead to debt, then name one method used to deny freed Black Americans their rights.
