What Students Need to Do: Students identify why the federal government created the Freedmen’s Bureau after the Civil War. They describe its work providing food, medical care, schools, labor support, and help reuniting families.
What Mastery Looks Like: Students can match postwar needs with specific Bureau services. They can explain how those services helped formerly enslaved people build lives in freedom, despite limited resources and resistance.
Common Misconceptions: Students may think the Bureau ended slavery or gave every freed family land. They may also think it only ran schools, when it provided several forms of aid and legal support.
How to Assess It: Give students this exit prompt: Name two Freedmen’s Bureau services and explain how each addressed a problem faced after the Civil War.
