What This Cluster Means

What Students Need to Do

Students read weather maps, charts, and daily measurements such as temperature, rainfall, wind, and air pressure. They use changes and repeated patterns to predict likely weather and explain their reasoning with evidence.

What Mastery Looks Like

A student can identify a weather pattern across several days and make a reasonable forecast. The student cites specific data from a chart or map and communicates the forecast clearly.

Common Misconceptions

Students may treat one day of data as a pattern or assume weather stays the same. They may confuse temperature with air pressure, wind direction with wind speed, or a prediction with a fact.

How to Assess It

Give students a five-day weather chart and ask, “What weather is likely on day six? Use two pieces of data to support your prediction.”

Ways to Teach It

  1. Set up a class weather station, record temperature, rainfall, wind direction, and cloud cover each day, then graph the results.

  2. Show two weather maps and ask students to write which location may get rain next, citing two map clues.

  3. Play Weather Forecaster by giving teams data cards to arrange in sequence and predict the next day’s conditions.

  4. Compare a local forecast with actual weather observations, then discuss which data may explain any differences.
