What This Cluster Means

What Students Need to Do

Students observe and record temperature, clouds, wind, and precipitation. They organize observations in a simple chart or picture graph, find patterns, and explain what the data show.

What Mastery Looks Like

A student can read several days of weather records and compare the conditions accurately. The student names a pattern and points to specific entries as evidence.

Common Misconceptions

Students may treat one day of weather as a pattern or assume conditions stay the same all day. They may confuse weather symbols or make claims that the recorded data do not support.

How to Assess It

Give students this five-day record: sunny, rainy, rainy, cloudy, rainy. Ask them to name the most common condition and support their answer with numbers.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Set up a class weather station with a thermometer, rain gauge, windsock, and cloud chart, then record observations each morning.

  2. Show a five-day weather chart and ask, "What pattern do you notice, and which data support your claim?"

  3. Play Weather Pattern Detective: pairs sort daily weather cards, name a pattern, and explain one card that does not fit.

  4. Compare the class weather chart with a local forecast, then choose suitable clothes for tomorrow and support the choice with data.
