The Standard
Plan and carry out investigations on current weather conditions by observing, measuring with simple weather instruments (thermometer, wind vane, rain gauge), and recording weather data (temperature, precipitation, sky conditions, and weather events) in a periodic journal, on a calendar, and graphically.

What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students observe the weather and use a thermometer, wind vane, and rain gauge to collect measurements. They record dated results in a journal, calendar, table, or graph and look for patterns.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students choose the correct tool, read it carefully, and record temperature, rainfall, sky conditions, and weather events. They use several entries to describe changes or repeated conditions.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may confuse temperature with sky conditions or think cloudy always means rain. They may read the wrong end of a wind vane or treat water left in a rain gauge as new rainfall. Some students record guesses instead of tool readings.
How to Assess It
- Give students a thermometer picture, wind vane picture, and a sky photo. Ask them to record each observation in a dated weather journal box.

Set up outdoor weather stations where teams read a thermometer, wind vane, and rain gauge, then record sky conditions on a class chart.
Ask students to compare today’s entry with yesterday’s and complete, “The weather changed because...” using two recorded details.
