What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students read weather calendars, picture graphs, or tables from different times of year. They compare the data and describe patterns in temperature, rainfall, or daylight across seasons.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Given a year of simple weather data, students identify how conditions usually change from season to season. They support the pattern with at least two details from the data.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may think every day in one season has the same weather. They may use one unusual hot or cold day to reject a pattern shown across many days.
How to Assess It
- Show a bar graph of average temperatures for January, April, July, and October. Ask, “What seasonal pattern do you notice, and which bars support your answer?”

Ways to Teach It
Give groups monthly temperature and weather cards to sort into seasons, then arrange the seasons in a repeating yearly cycle.
Display a class weather graph and ask, “How did our weather change, and what data proves it?”
Play Weather Pattern Detective by having pairs match season cards with temperature, daylight, rain, or snow clues.
Use a local monthly weather chart to choose clothing for four school events held in different seasons, then explain each choice.
