What Students Need to Do
- Students explain that weather describes short-term atmospheric conditions, while climate describes patterns measured over many years. They use facts from reliable sources to support the difference.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students correctly label examples as weather or climate and explain their choices. They cite evidence such as daily temperatures, rainfall records, or long-term averages.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may think weather and climate are the same or that one hot day proves a climate pattern. They may also confuse climate with seasons or assume every place has similar conditions.
How to Assess It
- Give students this prompt: “Atlanta had snow today, but its winters are usually mild. Identify the weather and climate information, then explain the difference.”

Have pairs sort daily weather cards and 30-year climate graphs into two labeled hoops, then explain each placement.
Ask students to write why one snowy day does not prove that a city has a cold climate.
