What This Cluster Means

What Students Need to Do

Students show when groups are joined or separated and tell how many there are. They use objects, drawings, and equations to solve short stories with totals up to 10. They explain that an equal sign means both sides have the same amount.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students model joining and separating situations with objects, drawings, words, and equations. They choose addition or subtraction for a story and explain that both sides of an equation have the same value.

Common Misconceptions

Students may think the equal sign means “write the answer” instead of “has the same value as.” They may add when a story describes taking away, or subtract in the wrong order.

How to Assess It

Give each student 10 counters and ask: “Show 7 take away 3, write an equation, and explain what the equal sign tells us.”

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give pairs 10 counters and cups, then call out joining and separating stories for them to model and record.

  2. Ask, “How are 6 + 2 = 8 and 8 - 2 = 6 connected?” and have students explain with drawings.

  3. Play Equation Match by pairing picture cards, story cards, and equation cards that show the same situation within 10.

  4. Set up a class snack shop where students add items to plates, remove eaten items, and write matching equations.
