What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students find totals and differences using objects, drawings, fingers, ten-frames, or counting. They select a strategy that fits the problem and show how they got the answer.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students solve problems accurately using counters, drawings, fingers, ten-frames, or counting. They choose a useful strategy and explain how it led to the answer.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may count the starting number as the first added object, causing an answer that is one off. They may remove the amount left instead of the amount taken away. Some follow the operation sign without matching it to the story.
How to Assess It
- Exit ticket: Solve 6 + 3 and 8 - 2 using a different strategy for each. Draw or label your thinking.

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs ten-frames and counters, call out equations such as 4 + 3 or 8 - 2, then compare their strategies.
Ask, “How could you solve 7 - 3 without counting every object?” Have students draw and explain two methods.
Play Strategy Match by pairing equation cards with picture cards showing fingers, ten-frames, number paths, or counters.
Place six crackers on a plate, add or remove some, and have students model and find the new total.
