What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students choose useful ways to solve addition and subtraction situations within 20. They rearrange or break apart numbers, make ten, and use related addition facts to subtract.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students solve story problems within 20 using strategies such as making ten, switching addends, or breaking apart numbers. They show their thinking with objects, drawings, or equations and explain why the strategy works.

Common Misconceptions

Students may think numbers can be switched in subtraction because they can be switched in addition. They may also break apart an addend but forget to include every part.

How to Assess It

Give this exit ticket: “Mia has 8 red counters and 7 blue counters. Find the total by making ten, then write a related subtraction fact.”

Ways to Teach It

  1. Have students build 8 + 7 with counters and ten-frames, then move counters to make a full ten.

  2. Ask students to explain in writing why 6 + 9 and 9 + 6 have the same total.

  3. Play a partner card game where students draw two number cards, add them, and name a helpful strategy.

  4. Set up a classroom supply problem where students combine or remove pencils, then record two related equations.
